| | Musical Instrument Sound Separation $90.48 In this book you will find three algorithms for separating the audio waveform of instruments in musical performances. Each of these algorithms uses stereo cues and makes some assumptions about the structure of music in order to exploit the resulting redundancy of the tones and to localize the instruments in space. Much detail is given on the development of the algorithms, ranging from the idea at the beginning with the initial assumptions to the final algorithm. Suggestions for fine tuning are presented along with extension ideas for each algorithm in part. A separate chapter is focusing on implementation details showing ways to get the maximum speed out of the available hardware and software. A review of the state of the art algorithms in scientific literature is also included along with the common problems encountered. The lack of tools to consistently evaluate the separation quality is considered and consequently two subjective quality criteria are introduced together with a new testing corpus. |

| | The Clarinet (Yale Musical Instrument Series) $38.48 The clarinet has a long and rich history as a solo, orchestral, and chamber musical instrument. In this broad-ranging account Eric Hoeprich, a performer, teacher, and expert on historical clarinets, explores its development, repertoire, and performance history. Looking at the antecedents of the clarinet, as well as such related instruments as the chalumeau, basset horn, alto clarinet, and bass clarinet, Hoeprich explains the use and development of the instrument in the Baroque age. The period from the late 1700s to Beethoven's early years is shown to have fostered ever wider distribution and use of the instrument, and a repertoire of increasing richness. The first half of the nineteenth century, a golden age for the clarinet, brought innovation in construction and great virtuosity in performance, while the following century and a half produced a surge in new works from many composers. The author also devotes a chapter to the role of the clarinet in bands, folk music, and jazz. |

| | The Oboe (Yale Musical Instrument Series) $35.48 The oboe, including its earlier forms the shawm and the hautboy, is an instrument with a long and rich history. In this book two distinguished oboist-musicologists trace that history from its beginnings to the present time, discussing how and why the oboe evolved, what music was written for it, and which players were prominent. Geoffrey Burgess and Bruce Haynes begin by describing the oboe's prehistory and subsequent development out of the shawm in the mid-seventeenth century. They then examine later stages of the instrument, from the classical hautboy to the transition to a keyed oboe and eventually the Conservatoire-system oboe. The authors consider the instrument's place in Romantic and Modernist music and analyze traditional and avant-garde developments after World War II. Noting the oboe's appearance in paintings and other iconography, as well as in distinctive musical contexts, they examine what this reveals about the instrument's social function in different eras. Throughout the book they discuss the great performers, from the pioneers of the seventeenth century to the traveling virtuosi of the eighteenth, the masters of the romantic period and the legends of the twentieth century such as Gillet, Goossens, Tabuteau, and Holliger. With its extensive illustrations, useful technical appendices, and discography, this is a comprehensive and authoritative volume that will be the essential companion for every woodwind student and performer. |

| | Brass Instrument $69.64 A brass instrument is a musical instrument whose sound is produced by sympathetic vibration of air in a tubular resonator in sympathy with the vibration of the player's lips. Brass instruments are also called labrosones, literally meaning lip-vibrated instruments There are two factors in producing different pitches on a brass instrument: One is alteration of the player's lip tension (or embouchure), and air flow. The second is the use of slides or valves to change the length of the tubing, thus changing the harmonic series presented by the instrument to the player. The view of most scholars (see organology) is that the term brass instrument should be defined by the way the sound is made, as above, and not by whether the instrument is actually made of brass. Thus, as exceptional cases one finds brass instruments made of wood like the alphorn, the cornett, and the serpent, while some woodwind instruments are made of brass, like the saxophone. |

| | The 2007-2012 World Outlook For Musical Instrument Manufacturing $969 This study covers the world outlook for musical instrument manufacturing across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-`-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. |

| | The 2007-2012 Outlook For Musical Instrument And Supplies Stores In Gr $609 This study covers the latent demand outlook for musical instrument and supplies stores across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as regions). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of economic population, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this economic definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a citys marketing and distribution value vis-`-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for musical instrument and supplies stores. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. | | An enactive approach to digital musical instrument design-Theory, Models, Techniques $77.48 Digital musical instruments bring about new problems and prospects for musical performance. In An enactive approach to digital musical instrument design, Newton Armstrong argues that these problems and prospects are theoretical and philosophical as much as they are technical. Drawing on the enactive cognitive science of Francisco Varela and others, as well as the phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Armstrong outlines a model of interaction based around circular chains of embodied interdependency between performer and instrument, and examines the ways in which technological resistance to human action plays a key role in the incremental acquisition of performative skill. This book is addressed to musicians and artists working with interactive systems, to theorists of new media, and to researchers and designers interested in human factors in computing. |
