When I hear the word "ram", I visualize accurately that one stick is used to strike a drum (unless, of course, I'm hungry, in which case I go another direction altogether). Simple, right? Wrong. Pestle, or more exactly, a mallet percussion, is any object used to strike a drum or percussion instrument, others to produce sound. This means that the category of percussion mallets includes items such as drummers and brushes and the pestle is omnipresent. Of course, it is fortunate for us that so many different types of mallets available, because they make possible the astonishing variety of sounds that can be produced from a single drum.

The pestle base, which is usually about 0.5 inches diameter and 16 inches long, is recognizable to almost everyone. Although they vary in length and material, the shape is generally quite standard that there can be no doubt about the name of the element.
