Notes
$12.98 Having a track called "Tinnitus" as your opener could give some people the wrong impression, but A Day in Black and White aren't so much about noise for noise's sake but various sonic experiments for the opener, including some lo-fi guitar rumbles that have been tweaked and altered. The outro, "Sink Brand Cut Waist," is almost identical to the opener, making for a nice series of sonic bookends. The group tears into "New Energy" with a rampant energy that sounds like power punk in the vein of Sum 41 and Jimmy Eat World -- a guitar-heavy structure backed by some over-the-top drumming of Ian Thompson. A melodic alt-rock nugget, "A Literal Title" ensues with lead singer and main songwriter Daniel Morse simultaneously singing yet speaking the lyrics while the bridge goes into trippy '60s-era jamming in the vein of the Who. Yet Morse also sometimes mines the ground previously tread on during the grunge era, especially with the Nirvana characteristics quite apparent during "Lame Duck." The bare-bones rocker "Long-Distance Song Effects" is a head-bobbing nugget that makes enduring the one or two momentarily lulls worth the generally pleasing and airtight nugget. And the same can be said for "Nothing With Nothing," which ups the ante with a garage rock flair in the vein of the Von Bondies or the Hives. Another high-octane romp is "Ronald's Right," which ebbs and flows like an ordinary "emo" anthem prior to a dreary instrumental portion. ~ Jason MacNeil, RoviPerformers: Daniel Morse - Sampling, Vocals; Ed Brant - Guitar; Sean McGuinness - Guitar; Mike Petillo - Bass; Ian Thompson - Drums, Percussion |

Drums (Scribner's Illustrated Classics)
$14.98 1925. This is novelist James Boyd's first book. Drums, set in Edenton, North Carolina, has been called the best novel written about the American Revolution. The author notes that in this book the main facts of history have been followed except in two cases: the Bonhomme Richard did not sail from Brest but from Lorient; the incident of the vagabond in Chapter XXXV did not occur at Brooks's Club but at another club in London. |

Sacred Spirit Drums
$16.98 Sacred Spirit Drums by brothers David and Steve Gordon is the sequel to their best-selling Sacred Earth Drums. With these two albums, the brothers begin to acknowledge their separate musical contributions (admittedly, they play many of the same instruments, but Steve adds guitars to the mix) and offer extensive liner notes, which in this case offer the story of the rituals of a shaman. Although the brothers play many African drums, the beats for most tracks are either basic Native American (4/4 or 1/1), with just slight embellishments; or, once established, the drum patterns remain a constant and easy groove. Native American flutes and jaunty Incan pan pipes provide the song, while guitar (the Spanish guitar on "Path with a Heart" is lovely), mandolin, electronic instruments, vocals, and nature sounds (birds recorded at Anzo Borrego National State Park) provide expansive musical depth. Sacred Spirit Drums is an intoxicating musical experience, accessible on many levels. The shaman's story is wonderful. ~ Carol Wright, All Music GuidePerformers: Steve Gordon - Multi Instruments, Vocals |

Percussions d'Afrique: African Drums
$9.99 Expanding and contracting musical forms, richly embroidered polyrhythmic patterns, and highly developed group dynamics characterize the Cameroonian and Senegalese percussion ensembles featured on Percussions d'Afrique: African Drums. Balafons (wooden-key xylophones with gourd-resonator frames), jemb?s (goblet-shaped hand drums), sundry rattles, and a large variety of other percussion instruments are heard on the CD's 11 tracks. From the oscillating and contrapuntal sounds of the drum ensemble featured on the opening track, "Danses S?n?galaises," to the shekere-grounded sounds on the album's last cut, "Danse des Hochets," a plethora of metric, rhythmic, and melodic explorations are heard. Unfortunately, the sketchy liner notes convey neither the identities of the performers nor the specific names of the places where the recordings were made. In addition, an overgeneralized assertion in the liner notes that "Africa's music culture...is dominated by percussion instruments" is a bit too simplistic. Africa is home to many diverse cultures and musical traditions, not all of which are adequately reflected by the sounds of West African percussion music. Though this cursory treatment in the liner notes is shortsighted, it does not affect the vivid and compelling nature of the field recordings presented here. ~ John Vallier |

Sacred Earth Drums
$16.98 Brothers David and Steve Gordon came up with a winner when they recorded Sacred Earth Drums, and it quickly became a bestseller in the new age market. This drum-based album marked a departure from the musical styles already offered by the brothers (namely, music and nature sounds and electronic music). The album begins with a lively Native American drum beat, 4/4 pulse (there is more pulsing, phrasing, and embellishment than a traditional Indian beat), rattles, a Native American flute, and bird songs. As the album progresses, the music becomes more elaborate; the flute melodies are more fanciful, warm guitars are added, and more complex rhythms (Latin and African) are added with other drums and percussion instruments. Eventually, other animals, keyboards, and space music effects fill out the sound spectrum. Though the music progresses (even into a light ambient), the beat's cadence remains constant. This is not a "percussion" jam album; no one element will overwhelm the room. The album's carefree spirit is perfect for trance-dancing or as a background energizer. You can't help but jump on board this rhythm wagon. The album liner notes are a story line for a shamanic journey for those who wish to relate to the album in this way. If you like this album, check out their follow-up, Sacred Spirit Drums. ~ Carol Wright, All Music GuidePerformers: David Gordon - Multi Instruments; Steve Gordon - Multi Instruments |

Drums of Fu Manchu
$12.52 Rated: NA Synopsis: Every time that sinister Oriental megalomaniac Dr. Fu Manchu is ready to kill, sounds of strange drums can be heard coming from -- well, nowhere really. In 1939, Republic Pictures purchased the rights to the first six of British pulp fiction writer Sax Rohmer's popular "Fu Manchu" stories. The result became the studio's second longest action serial and one of its most enduringly popular. The head of a sinister conglomeration known as the Si-Fan, Dr. Fu Manchu (Henry Brandon) goes in search of the Sacred Scepter of Genghis Khan, with which he hopes to rule all the tribes of the Orient and evict the foreign infidels. Helping the good doctor is Fah-Lo-Suee (Gloria Franklin), his Eurasian daughter, and a seemingly unlimited supply of Dacoits, henchmen turned into slaves by having undergone frontal lobotomies. Dr. Fu Manchu is, as always, opposed by Sir Neyland Smith (William Royle) of the British Foreign Office. This time, however, Sir Neyland is not only aided by his very own "Dr. Watson," Dr. Petrie (Olaf Hytten), but also by a young American, Allan Parker (Robert Kellard), whose father (George Cleveland) had become yet another of Fu Manchu's many victims. Complicating the search is the attractive presence of Mary Randolph (Luana Walters) who, like most of her ilk, has a tendency to get herself into serious trouble at the most inopportune moments. Although the Oriental fiend appears all-powerful at times, Sir Neyland and his friends once again save the free world from enslavement -- although it takes them 15 chapters to do so. Hans J. Soulful Drums [2001]
$11.98 One of the latest in the Original Jazz Classics' two-fer series has the greatest of all Jack McDuff's organ groups assembled for two different albums on this CD, both from 1966. This is a partial issue of a number of albums all issued by the same group. Guitarist George Benson, saxophonist Red Holloway, and Joe Dukes all had records issued under their names by Prestige. The first six tracks were issued under the original title Soulful Drums of Joe Dukes, and the last half under McDuff's name and the title Hot Barbeque. It is fitting that these two sessions be reissued together, with gorgeous remastered sound, because they are two of the funkiest, deep groove jazz organ records of all time. The reason is simple, and is evident from the opening cut, the title, that McDuff was an in-the-pocket player. He liked to keep it greasy, full of soul, and walked the line right between jazz and blues. With a front line that included Holloway and Benson and often Alvin "Red" Tyler, he needed a drummer who was more than a timekeeper; he needed someone who could draw attention to the bottom end of the spectrum. Joe Dukes was an under-appreciated jazz and R&B drummer and was just the man for the job. For one thing, time was an element of the propulsion of force. There was no such thing as a 4/4 time in Dukes' world, as revealed in any track you care to select here from "Mookah the D.J." to the Memphis soul-flavored "Moanin' Bench" to the stomp of "The Three Day Thang"; Dukes shifted forced time through his kit by a series of tom-tom rolls and high hat skitters and skeins of cross rhythms that held McDuff in check and let him lead the band. Dukes was the key to the band's deep, funky danceable sound and its architect for players like Benson and Holloway to solo their asses off. His steaming tom-tom roll on "My Three Sons" has Benson saying catch up from the word go, slashing out three-chord runs to keep time. McDuff, relaxed as ever, keeps it all grooving with just enough soul to make it blues and just enough open-ended choral chromaticism to make it jazz. This tune jams its way through four key changes and obliterates both the jump blues it was taken from and the hard bebop stylings its harmonic structure was built upon. Red Tyler's solo here is one of the fastest and deepest blue he ever played. Hot Barbeque is the swampier of the two albums, wider and sweatier on the funk end of the spectrum -- after all, it was 1966 and every cat on Blue Note was trying the same stuff. Holloway carries the McDuff/Dukes shuffle through the roof with his solo and Benson comps with fat chords laid on thick as fried onions. His own solo is less about how many notes but which ones he can bend to make them sit at the bottom of this groove. There is the easy strut of tunes like "The Party's Over," where McDuff indulges his lyrical side and Benson paints him in with lovely augmented sevenths in an ornate blues, but it's more in the sprints like "Briar Patch," driven by Dukes' bass dru |

Roots!! African Drums
$11.98 An earlier entry in the field of world music on CD, Roots!! from the National Percussion Group of Kenya, led by George Menoe, covers the majority of the Kenyan percussion sound. The liner notes lost a bit in translation and appear to be a bit behind the times, but the basic gist can be derived, and it is the music that should be the focus anyway. The disc begins with a piece depicting a witch doctor's sacrificial slaughter of an animal. It then moves on to a piece imitating bird and animal calls, and a vocal piece dealing with trees. The final three works are a women's dance, a workday-ending song, and a dance from the "fearless Masai tribe." What is amazing here is not the interlocking nature of hits that is common to so much of African music, but the interaction of the interlocking with the sheer speed of the individual drummers. Between the two aspects, the volleying effect of the group is amplified, generally without overlap and an almost constant tone begins to emerge in some places from the sheer raising frequency of beats. In some ways very mildly reminiscent of the vocals of the Muungano National Choir, and in other ways mildly reminiscent of the various master drummers of West Africa (Mustapha Tettey Addy among them), this album from the National Percussion Group of Kenya should be heard at least once by anyone that regularly deals in the field -- the authenticity of the music can be determined by the listener; the important part is that it's listened to in the first place. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide |
