Different combinations of musicians have different names, based primarily on personnel, instrumentation and style of music played.
An orchestra traditionally consists of the following: strings (violins, violas, cellos, double bass), brasses (trumpets, trombones, horns French), woodwinds (clarinet, oboe, bassoon, flute, piccolo) and percussion (snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, Misc. instruments percussion). Although there are exceptions, a band playing mainly symphonic music (Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, etc.) and often performs in a together. Most bands sit in the same way with the violins and violas on the left of the head, cellos, on his right, the woods behind the ropes, brass at the back right of the conductor and percussion, back center. Its quite common that a piano is included to the left immediate driver. A soloist usually takes this position as well. The average size of the orchestra is 75 to 100 players. Smaller groups of 50 or less are often called chamber orchestras.
The orchestra word is sometimes used less informal such as Mandolin Orchestra Great Britain. The Boston Pops Orchestra is known for playing popular songs of the day.
A band concert, unlike a orchestra has no string instruments like the violin or cello. And where the orchestra usually three trumpets, a band may be up twelve (as well as many trombones and clarinets). Although music concert band may range from symphonic to jazz to popular, many bands are known to play marches like The Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post March. Groups both play in a concert and function as a band (as in parades or as part of the festival during a football match).
The word band, of course, can also be used to describe a rock band, Dixieland Band, or group of hip hop. Personnel and instrumentation is highly variable in these groups as well as the music is played.
A choir is composed entirely of singers (and often a piano accompanist) and often takes the form of singers, men and women divided into five voices (lines voice): soprano and alto (female) and tenor, baritone and bass (men). Music written for chorus uses five voices to create pieces that would could be played by musical instruments. Choirs can be all male or female and there are many specialty choirs such as vocalists that perform only certain styles of music. Jazz vocals are quite common as the quartets hairdresser.
A set is a "catch-all phrase" for a group of musicians. The term is mainly used to describe string ensembles. The term is sometimes used to describe a group of singers (for example, a vocal ensemble). Typically, a set consisting of four to twenty members. It is derived from the word "meeting".
The Combo word (the word "together") is sometimes used to describe a whole, but for most, this means that four or five groups each, usually with guitar, bass and drums. You will see the term most often to describe jazz musicians (ie, a jazz combo).
