The harp that once the halls of Tara through the soul of music shed,
now hangs as mute on Tara's walls, as if This soul was fled.
Dort if the pride of former days, the thrill is o'er glory,
and hearts that beat once high praise
now feel that pulse no longer
To tell the story of the Irish harp is to tell the story of the Irish people. This former traditional instrument, with its beautiful, delicate sound is played today despite being ignored, derided and proscribed for centuries. Harper, who, days earlier, would have been hanged for their art, now flourish throughout the world, as the Irish themselves
Legend tell us the first harp was owned by Dagda, a chief among the Tuatha Dé Danann. At one point during a war with Fomorians, the gods of cold and darkness, his harp was stolen but later recovered by Lugh and Ogma. When he returned, he had acquired two names intelligence and ability to attract the summer and winter. Therefore, when Dagda played, he could produce a melody so poignant, he would cry its audience, it could play an air so jubilant it would smile, everyone, or make a sound so tranquil, it would lull all who listened to sleep. Thus, so the harp became the dispenser of pain, joy and rest.
Harps are played throughout much of the world. Art sales ancient tales and epic poetry, we learn of harps in Babylonia and Mesopotamia. We see them in the tomb of Pharaoh Ramses III, votive carvings from Iraq and sculptures of ancient Greece. From Africa, with more than 100 harp traditions, the instrument traveled to northern Spain and has rapidly spread throughout Europe. Strung with sinew, silk or wire, harps vary in size, structure and decoration based on natural environments technology and their origins. African harps were made of wood and gourd covered with cowhide, the Burmese Blood penguin has a sounding board in an arc similar the Turkish CEng while European harps feature a triangular frame, it is a characteristic shared by all the harp strings vertical pipe (and Not that parallel) to the soundboard.
Griffith of Wales employed harpists in his court to the late 11th century and the monk-historian Geraldus Cambrensis admired the great talents of the Irish harp and noticed that some have even considered the Scots to be better players. For harpists Irish and Scottish commonly visited each other country to study, learn and exchange tunes and their music was admired throughout Europe. Another twelfth century archivist, John of Salisbury, wrote that "… there was no Irish harp, there were no music at all on the Crusades. "
These harps were quite different from the large pedal harps we see in the modern symphony orchestras. They were much more Small, originally held on Harper's lap, leaning against the left shoulder, had no pedals, and in general have been carved from one piece of wood peat. The Trinity College Harp and Queen Mary's Harp are the oldest Celtic harps and date from the 15th or 16th centuries, and illustrate the similarity between Irish and Scottish harps. A distinguishing characteristic of these Gaelic harps was that they were son tense, rather than the gut nervous. The word "harp" has its roots in Anglo-Saxon, Old German and Old Norse words meaning "pluck." In Gaelic they were first known as Cruit and later as clarsach or irseach ¡cla.
The harp is not peculiar to Ireland, but then became its national emblem. (Nowadays you can even see it on the Guinness label) Harpers were highly trained professionals who performed for the nobility and enjoyed political power – so much so that during the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I issued a proclamation to hang Irish harpists and destroy their instruments to prevent insurrection.
Unfortunately, this ancient symbol of Ireland is still with us today most of the old tunes and melodies once produced are long, but Harper's Young up the challenge to revive the pride of yesteryear.
