Guitars are made up of many parts and pieces. Keys, soundboards, strings, dolls all these components are essential for a guitar and all have an impact on the musical instrument. However, there is at least one piece of the guitar that has absolutely no influence on the sound of the instrument: the pickguard. This piece of laminated material resides in the guitar strings on the body of the instrument. Its purpose is to prevent the end of the guitar from being scratched or damaged by the guitar pick. Thus, while the pickguard may serve a very important goal, especially to someone who has just paid several thousand dollars for a brand new toy, it has nevertheless no music application.
Although Pickguards can come in a range designs, guitar designers usually try to match the style of a guitar headstock and pickguard. This is true both for acoustic instruments and electrical. On acoustic guitars, Pickguards are usually made of thin plastic and attaches just below the soundhole.
