| | Doc Watson on Stage (Featuring Merle Watson) $17.98 One of Doc Watson's finest later records, Doc Watson on Stage is a virtual travelogue of his entire career in one record, almost a greatest-hits record, live. Assisted by Merle Watson, the program flows from lightning fast hoedowns such as "Brown's Ferry Blues," where Watson picks lightning fast with a dexterity that is almost unbelievable. His feel and command of the instrument is truly incredible. "Open Up Them Pearly Gates for Me" has a similar effect. There are also numerous stories and patter (mostly about the songs) in between the cuts, and it guides you through the performance. Watson also shines on this album as well, especially his exquisite fingerpicking on "Banks of the Ohio." A timeless slice from one of the fathers of modern country music. ~ Matthew Greenwald, All Music GuidePerformers: Merle Watson - Dobro, Guitar; Doc Watson - Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals |

| | Doc Watson & Son $11.98 Merle Watson's debut with father Doc Watson was recorded shortly after they performed their first concerts together in California, and it shows the duo's musical partnership already in full flower, an incredible fact considering that Merle had only been picking guitar for eight months! The best songs here turned up on later Vanguard best-ofs, but there's a fair amount of greatness in the astonishing instrumental medley "Fiddler's Dram/Whistling Rufus/Ragtime Annie" and "Little Stream of Whiskey," an old Irish drinking song transformed into a hobo ballad with a bouncy fingerpicked melody. Perhaps most astonishing is the solo harmonica workout "Mama Blues," in which the elder Watson imitates the sound of a child crying, showing off yet another facet of his incredible musical skill. ~ Jim Smith, All Music GuidePerformers: Doc Watson - Guitar, Guitar (12 String), Harmonica, Vocals; Merle Watson - Guitar |
| | Watson Country $16.98 This collection is drawn from the albums Watson recorded for Flying Fish between 1980-1984. As the title implies, it features a selection of traditional country tunes and newer songs done in a country style. It has the smooth Nashville production characteristic of his albums of the time, but that's not really a flaw -- even if it takes some of the leather out of his playing, having a full backing band extends his appeal beyond the hillbilly curtain, and to many ears, that's a good thing. Everyone sounds comfortable and plays great, with Mark O'Connor and Sam Bush being a few of the musicians contributing. A nice range of writers are covered here too, including Jimmie Rodgers, Merle Travis, Tom Paxton, the Delmore Brothers, and Dan Fogelberg. Doc recorded many albums in this style, but for newcomers this is a nice sampler of his middle years. ~ Jim Smith, All Music GuidePerformers: Byron Berline - Fiddle; Sam Bush - Fiddle, Mandolin; Mark O'Connor - Fiddle, Mandolin; Herb Pedersen - Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Al Perkins - Pedal Steel; Joe Smothers - Vocals (Background); Merle Watson - Banjo, Guitar, Guitar (Rhythm), Slide Guitar; T. Michael Coleman - Bass, Guitar, Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony; Pat McInerney - Drums, Percussion; Tom Scott - Clarinet; Ron Tutt - Drums; Doc Watson - Guitar, Harmonica, Harmony Vocals, Vocal Harmony, Vocals |

| | The Doc Watson Family $16.98 Doc Watson, grandfather of the folk revival movement, has had a profound influence on American traditional music. Not only did he pioneer the playing of fiddle tunes on a flattop guitar, but through his incessant touring has brought traditional music to a larger audience. This Smithsonian Folkways release captures not only Doc Watson, but almost a dozen family members at the height of their power and has been deservingly hailed as a classic recording. Right from the opening track, "Old Groundhog," Watson and family send the listener on an amazing journey into the American musical past and present. Incidentally, their performance of "Old Groundhog" is certainly the equal of Bascom Lamar Lunsford's "I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground," in terms of surreal country, capturing as it does race relations, commentary on shoe strings, as well directions for catching a groundhog. On "The House Carpenter," a weepy tale of that conflates religious and personal love, a haunting female voice sings almost off-key accompanied only by a fiddle that doubles on the melody. On the instrumental "Bonaparte's Retreat," Watson offers a droning, sea shanty-influenced version of this song staple of Mississippi river communities. Some of the family's best work is found in the spirituals scattered about the album. "When I Die" features a beautiful, uplifting three-part harmony, as does "The Lost Soul," which contains the wickedly abject refrain, "I'm paying now/the penalty." A fabulous record that's a must-listen for any serious fan of American music. ~ Brian Whitener, All Music GuidePerformers: Doc Watson - Autoharp, Banjo, Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals; Gaither Carlton - Banjo, Fiddle, Vocals; Arnold Watson - Banjo, Harmonica, Vocals; Merle Watson - Banjo, Guitar; Willard Watson - Banjo; Dolly Greer - Vocals; Sophronie Miller Greer - Vocals; Ralph Rinzler - Guitar; The Watson Family - Vocals; Annie Watson - Vocals; |

| | Merle Travis: At Town Hall Party - $34.99 The critically-worshipped country boogie guitarist and songwriter Merle Travis (author of the Tennessee Ernie Ford ballad "Sixteen Tons") made the most enduring impact on guitar technique of any country performer outside of Chet Atkins, and even inspired a new stylistic trend, dubbed "Travis picking." Kentuckian Travis grew up in impoverished rural surroundings and, as something of a teenage prodigy on the guitar and banjo, managed to support himself as a musician from the age of twenty, when he joined Clayton McMichen's Georgia Wildcats. He broke through to national acclaim a bit later, as a member of the gospel group Brown's Ferry Four, then struck out on his own. Scores of albums and singles followed; hits included "Divorce Me, C.O.D.," "Three Times Seven," "Dark as a Dungeon," and of course "Sixteen Tons." Travis became the unofficial mentor to many additional performers (from multiple genres), including The Everly Brothers and Doc Watson, and experienced a period of resurgence in the seventies, but became notorious for his out-of-control private life, as well as alleged alcoholism and acts of domestic violence, prior to his death from a heart attack in late 1983. Travis's musical legacy, however, cannot be overestimated. Now, the concert compilation Merle Travis: Live at Town Hall Party spotlights the musician's genius, with vintage archival footage of Travis performing, originally broadcast on the Town Hall Party television series between 1952 and 1961. Twenty-six numbers appear here, in full, including: "Cincinnati Lou," "Midnight Special," "Back Home in Indiana," "Nine Pound Hammer," and "Cannonball Rag." ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide |
| | The Elementary Doctor Watson! [Tomato] $10.18 This was Watson's first album after leaving Vanguard, and it nicely showcased his new "country" sound, featuring mellow but terrifically played traditional and contemporary material. Particularly nice are the versions of "Going Down the Road Feeling Bad," Tom Paxton's "The Last Thing on My Mind," and "More Pretty Girls Than One." With Norman Blake (on dobro) and Vassar Clements contributing, this is a great Sunday morning record, a genuine pleasure from start to finish. ~ Jim Smith, All Music GuidePerformers: Norman Blake - Dobro; Vassar Clements - Fiddle; Merle Watson - Banjo, Guitar; Joseph Allen - Bass; Jim Isbell - Drums; Ken Lauber - Piano; Doc Watson - Guitar |

| | Trouble in Mind: Doc Watson Country Blues Collection $16.98 Trouble in Mind makes an interesting argument: Doc Watson, long deified in bluegrass and traditional folk circles, is also a fine country blues player. Perhaps the misunderstanding comes from the long tradition of dividing blues and folk players into different genres, or the mistaken assumption that black musicians (who often played the blues) didn't influence white musicians (who usually played folk). Watson, as this collection shows, included pieces like "Country Blues" at the very beginning of his career in 1964. For the next 34 years he repeatedly returned to the blues well, drawing on favorites like "Worried Blues," "Never No More Blues," and "Memphis Blues." Watson's eclectic approach uses a variety of instruments to render these traditional and public domain pieces fresh. On "Rain Crow Bill" he plays solo harmonica; on "White House Blues" he plays banjo. Most of the arrangements are simple, often augmented by his son Merle Watson on a second guitar or banjo. Another reason that many have never identified Watson as a blues player also has something to do with his guitar style. His fingerpicking method has more in common with the Piedmont style of John Hurt than the more familiar Delta style of Robert Johnson. The less-bluesy Piedmont style, in fact, seems much closer to folk. Trouble in Mind makes a convincing argument for Watson's ability as a purveyor of the blues. In its fine selection of songs and well-executed performances, though, the collection is no different than other Watson collections: good music, regardless of genre, is good music. ~ Ronnie Lankford, Jr., All Music GuidePerformers: Arnold Watson - Banjo; Doc Watson - Banjo, Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals; Merle Watson - Banjo, Guitar; Eric Weissberg - Bass |
