Is it hard to play the saxophone? How key is it?
What is the best alto saxophone regular or if you are a beginner?
What do you mean by hard? Difficult to make noise? Difficult it is to make music? There are about 23 keys (some 21, some have 22), but mostly, the saxophonist did use seven of them. Other keys are alternative fingerings, changes color (from A to A # / Bb, etc..) Do not really worry about this because if you learn the instrument, you learn each key one at a time so it is not as "discouraging" to learn all. What are you given the "regular" saxophone? There is no saxophone "regular." Both Saxophone primary people play and learn on the alto and tenor. The viola is generally considered the best for a beginner to start as it is smaller so it takes less air, has the best intonation (although the content is almost exactly the same) and it will be more music and beginner band music available for it.

| | 11 Duets for Saxophone: For Alto And/Or Tenor Saxophone $29.95 This book offers eleven duets for second and third-year alto and tenor saxophone students with some experience in sight reading in the common keys. The pieces were composed in extremely varied styles from jazz to Calypso and from blues to French waltz-musette. Apart from learning different styles of music, the pieces have one common goal- to convey the joy of making music in a small ensemble. The duets can be played with either two alto or two tenor saxes, or with an alto playing the upper voice and a tenor for the lower voice. The transposed parts for the tenor sax 2 are printed in a pull-out segment along with the keyboard/guitar chord progressions in two keys appropriate for the E-flat alto and B-flat tenor parts. This format provides both notation and the chord accompaniment for almost any combination of the two saxes, the exception being tenor sax 1 with alto sax 2. The companion CD offers play-along tracks for both types of saxes. As the two saxophones are recorded in split-track format, one channel can be muted using the balance knob of your stereo, enabling you to play along with either voice on the recording. Due to their melodic and diversified character, these duets are well suited for recitals and often become student favorites. In recital, the duets can be performed with a live pianist or guitarist using the chord progressions provided, or with the piano accompaniment on the CD for E-flat alto lead only. The duets can also be performed effectively by two unaccompanied saxophones. |
| | Solo Saxophone II: Life $11.98 Released the same year as Hush, Solo Saxophone II: Life was John Klemmer's third release for Elektra in two years. Interestingly, he followed the same formula he did with MCA: score a big single (in this case "Let's Make Love" from Hush) and strong arm the label into letting you do a more experimental outing. Self-produced and cut very quickly, Life is not so entrenched in the soft meditative vibe that his solo saxophone album Cry had been three years earlier. It begins with the sound of a kalimba as the prologue/intro into "Humanesque," which is an actual melody with a solo structure built in. Given Klemmer's signature echoplex saxophone, and the new-ish digital delay technology, he could multitrack harmonics in ways that weren't possible just a few years before: listen to the contrast between middle and lower registers on the various thematic interludes on this cut and it becomes readily apparent. His technical skill is superb, and his ability to roll notes in full voice (just the way his mentor John Coltrane did) as he moves in and out of phrases is quite remarkable. But the most important thing is that there is real soul in Klemmer's playing, not only on this cut, but on all of them. The kinds of impressionistic emotions that appear on most of his full band recordings of the period, where tunes and feelings are drowned out by production are almost absent here. In fact, as Klemmer moves into the true masterpiece on this set, "The Journey from Life to Death," it feels like he's actually trying to show the listener his insides. The primal sounding "Deepest Need of the Human Heart" is another such moment, where Clint Holmes gets to sing wordless falsetto with Klemmer's horn. The hard blowing on "Yes to Life" is startlingly fine and is pushed to near extremes in "The Mystery of Being," when a pitch bender and other electronic devices are added to the sparser lyric lines in the tune. While it's true the titles are sappy and pretentious, there are only two such moments on the entire album, and both of them involve Holmes and both are played on the Rhodes piano instead of on the saxophone: "The Rain Is the Tears of My God for Me," and "All I Ever Wanted Is My Life." While the feelings these songs express may indeed be authentic and real, they feel wildly out of place here. The last track proper on this set, "The Struggle to Be Free," is another killer Klemmer space sax workout where he plays around scales, and plays as if he turned a specific melody inside out. Its emotion, which is rather more suggestive than overblown, feels truly authentic and vulnerable. There is no talking any listener into actually enjoying a record like this one: she either will or won't. That said, even if this is perceived as an exercise in ego, Solo Saxophone II: Life should be appreciated for what it is, a very naked and vulnerable statement by a musician whose love for both his horn and the spiritual nature in his own heart is elusive, enigmatic, and all but inexpr |
| | The Jazz Method for Tenor Saxophone $16.84 These methods provide complete courses for players of all ages, guiding students from their first note to 'classics', together with compositions by contemporary writers. Each book is accompanied by high quality rhythm section tracks recorded on compact disc. Right from the start, students can enjoy authentic jazz sounds, playing in the company of professionals. With step-by-step instruction and a progression of specially written pieces, the fundamental elements of good technique are introduced alongside the rhythmic subtleties of jazz. Improvisation is encouraged from an early stage and is given direction through the systematic study of scales and arpeggios and advice on ear-training and chord patterns. With supplementary suggestions for listening and reading, and an Appendix containing all the chord progressions for 'live' accompaniment of the tunes, The Jazz Methods are ideally suited to both students working alone and those learning with a teacher. John O'Neill has a solid understanding of jazz and how it can be taught. I highly recommend his educational jazz materials. (Jamey Aebersold) ...a rare opportunity for a new player (or a more experienced one) to develop a really musical facility. A rare addition to the jazz improvising library. (Lee Konitz, international jazz saxophone soloist) - includes 'classics' by Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins and Horace Silver - ...very good original jazz tunes that students will use as stepping stones for further development... a non-jazz-playing flute teacher would probably find the book a godsend especially if students are studying GCSE music.
